Techniques for attaching overlays

Hello everyone, Kim from Australia here to share with you a couple of tips for attaching your overlays to your layout. People often ask me how I attach the overlay without the adhesive showing. Here are two tricks I use.

Adhere your base cardstock or pattern paper down and then lay but do not glue down your photos where you want them to go. Lift up the photo and apply some adhesive such as double sided tape to the card stock and then remove the photo. 

Now cut your overlay to size and using the adhesive on your base cardstock attach the overlay to your layout.  If you want you could now return the photo to its original position and the adhesive is hidden under the photo. Easy!

To further enhance your layout and to ensure the overlay is secure I now use my sewing machine and stitch around the edge of the over lay, usually using a zig zag stitch.

Now you can go ahead and adhere your photo down on top of the overlay in its original position. 

Go ahead now and complete your layout. I have used the baby buggy in blue over lay, onesies over lay in blue, blue script washi tape, wood grain alphabet letter stickers and a butterfly from the butterflies and flowers sticker sheet.

I hope this gives you a few new tricks the next time you use one of our overlays.

DT Tutorial Stephanie

Hello again lovely Hambly blog readers! I’m so thrilled to be sharing another tutorial with you. Today I’m going to show you how to do a fun weaving pattern with paper that you can use to jazz up a notebook or something similar. Let’s get started!

 
1.       Pick two sheets of Hambly paper and cut them into strips one inch wide to fit the dimensions of your notebook.


2.       Put a bit of adhesive at one end of your first strip of paper and adhere the strip to the top left-hand corner of the book. Repeat with a few more strips of the same paper and adhere next to the previous strip, leaving no gaps. (I find it easier to just stick down a few at a time and then weave those, rather than doing the whole lot in one go.)


3.       Take a strip of the second paper and weave it under and over the pieces of vertical patterned paper.



4.       Push the paper along until it lines up with the edge of the first vertical strip and stick the edge down.


5.       Repeat with a few  more horizontal strips.


6.       Repeat the whole process from steps 2-5 until your whole book is covered. Adhere letter stickers if you wish.
 
And that’s it! You’ll be addicted to this technique, for sure...I definitely am!!

Hi - it's Amy here to combine a few of my favorite things. As the washi tape collection grows, I have been searching for more creative ways to store them. Since I usually like to be able to take them with me, some kind of container is the preferable mode of transport. I decided to use a film canister.






I started off by spraying the lid with paint.


While it was drying in the sun, I gathered some scraps and a doily, and ran it through my Xyron to make them into stickers.






After it was dry, it was time to put on the stickers and strips of tape.




And this is what it looks like now with the tapes in it and a label from the packaging on top.

DT Tutorial Tiffany - Bowties!

Hello everyone! It’s Tiffany here with another fun tutorial for you!

If you’re like me, you’re in love with the Hambly Bowtie Papers, Overlays, and Rub-ons. So, I have a short tutorial on an oldie-but-goodie paper folding trick on how to make an oragami bow-tie! Remember making these out of dollar bills?

1.  Trim woodgrain or other patterned paper to 4x6 or any other rectangular dimension you desire.

2.  Fold in half length-wise.

3.  Fold sides into the center seam or fold.

4.  Fold down in half.

5.  Take the right corner, open up the side, and fold down forming a triangular tip.

6.  Repeat with the left corner.

7.  Open up sides and fold placing the seams on the inside.

8.  Fold flaps up forming a seam at the base of the triangle on each side then turn so that opening is at the bottom.

9.  Fold corners in at each side forming a triangular tip and repeat with the other side.

10.           Now, open the bow-tie slowly with the seams at the back.

11.           Flatten the center.

12.           Now you can hot glue a clothespin and decorate as you like!

Washi tape flags and pennants by Kim Jeffress
There are two things big in the scrapbooking world today, Washi tapes and flags/pennants. Today I would like to combine the two to show you three projects using Hambly’s new fabulous Washi tapes. I love that the come in two different widths, and some amazing array of colours. For these projects you will need Hambly  washi tapes, a bamboo skewer or toothpick, twine, and a decorative pin .

Step 1 Take your decorative pin and some washi tape, now tear off some length about 2 inches long from the tape and lay the pin against the middle of the tape as shown.

Step 2 Fold the tape in half making sure the pin is right on the crease of your folded tape.

Step 3 Using your scissors cut a small triangle from the end of your tape to form the flag. You can make the length of your tape any size depending on your project.

Step 4 attach your flag to your card or project as shown, since I added two flags I popped one of them up with foam tape for some depth. Here I have used the gorgeous new portrait gallery overlay in gold.

I decided to make a banner for my cabinet to brighten it up a bit.
Step 1 Cut  a length of twine and using three different coloured  washi tapes attach the tapes to the twine as your did with the pin, creating  a pattern as you go.

Step 2 Fold the tape and cut the tape at different lengths using your scissors.



Drape your banner over photo frames, vases , words or hang them from small decorative hooks for a fun look too.
For my layout I loved Allison’s moustache flags so much, I decided to use her idea and also add some washi tape flags as well to me layout. Don’t you just love the fun NEW moustaches vellum paper and rub ons..... I have attached the tape as directed above, rubbed the rubons on to some white cardstock then cut around them and attached them with foam tape to the skewers, so easy and fun.

Hello it´s Larissa here to show you some tips on decorating a "Clear Scraps Scalloped Tab Album" with some Hambly overlays and papers.

Materials needed:

Clear Scraps Scalloped Tab Album
Hambly Screenprints Overlays: Mini Moustaches, Portrait Gallery; Frame Wallpaper
Adhesive
Hambly Washi Tape
Hambly Screenprints Rub-ons - Moustaches, Lace Borders, Textures One, Elegant Labels, Antique Frames
White Cardstock
Patterned Paper/Hambly Screenprints Paper (Old Lace)
Permanent Marker; Acrylic Paint; alcohol ink
Lace, trims, blings, flowers, alphabets, journaling cards, buttons

Tips:

When working with transparencies or a clear acrylic album, a great possibility is to paint the borders with acrylic paints or to use Staz-on ink for applying stamped images or to ink the borders. Also,  sometimes I like to apply alcohol inks to add a little color to the borders.
You can also use permanent markers to decorate it or to add definition and contrast. Take advantage of the fact that the transparencies sheets will show through the back side and place and adhesive your elements on the front sheet with strategic, at the same position that those you´re going to place on the back. While decorating your pages think of every page of your book as nothing more than scrapbooking on a smaller scale and leave some of the transparent sheet exposed as a window to the adjacent pages. You can also use Hambly rub-ons, transparent die cuts or overlays to add more interest. And do not forget to start your album by removing the proctetive film. That´s something you must do before embellishing.
